Some options for whitening:
For whites try Trader Joe's powder. It works so well it can even take out stains on clothes that have been washed with something else and dried in the dryer. But BE CAREFUL, it can also take out colors, thats why I only use it on whites.
I generally add a couple tablespoons of Borax to white loads and always put about a cup of vinegar in the rinse water.
