NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR WOMEN, INFANTS & CHILDREN 5 and UNDER
http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/FMNP/FMNPfaqs.htm

WIC SPECIAL SUPPLIMENT NUTRITION PROGRAM for Women, Infants and Children.  The WIC Program provides supplemental foods, health care referrals and nutrition education at no cost to low-income pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding post-partum women, and to infants and children up to 5 years of age, who are found to be at nutritional risk. WIC provides nutritional assistance to "low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women," and to their children up to age five.

WIC FARMER'S MARKET NUTRITION PROGRAM
http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/FMNP/FMNPfaqs.htm

If you receive WIC or if you're a low-income senior, you may also qualify for their farmers market program, which means you can take advantage of the same fresh-from-the-farm bounty as those coke-snorting yuppies who'll buy anything with the word "heirloom" stamped across it.  Both the regular and senior versions of the Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) distribute coupons, which "can be used to buy fresh, unprepared fruits, vegetables and herbs from farmers, farmers' markets or roadside stands that have been approved by the State agency to accept FMNP coupons." Sorry, no prunes, raisins, nuts, honey, maple syrup, or cider. (You can still sign whatever wacky petition is being circulated that day, though.)
A variety of fresh, nutritious, unprepared, locally grown fruits, vegetables and herbs may be purchased with FMNP coupons.  Each State agency develops a list of fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs that can be purchased with FMNP coupons.

ORGANIC FOOD:

For low cost ideas for eating organic   Healthy Child Healthy World low cost organic

Also watch Dr. Greene's you tube short video's on feeding your child the top 10 foods to eat organic  down a few on the page.  milk, potatoes, peanut butter, baby food, catsup, apples, beef, soy, corn.

Be aware of the fruits and vegetables that are highest (and lowest) in pesticides. You can get a list from the Environmental Working Group, at www.foodnews.org/walletguide.php.

Environmental Working Group says the worst offenders are: (It is better to buy these organic.)
peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines and strawberries.

At the other end of the spectrum (lowest in pesticide residues):
onions, avocado, frozen sweet corn, pineapples, mango, and asparagus.

THE DIRTY DOZEN

The “dirty dozen” are the most commonly and highly contaminated foods with pesticides and chemicals, even after washing and peeling. The research used to compile this list is from extensive independent tests run by the FDA and the USDA from over 100,000 samples of food. The chemical pesticides detected in these studies are known to cause cancer, birth defects, nervous system and brain damage, and development problems in children.

SUPER HEALTHY FOOD THAT COSTS LESS: FROM NY TIMES WELLNESS

TIPS

1.     Generic multivitamin: Make sure to take a daily multivitamin

2.     Cook healthily in super-bulk once a week (Sundays) and then freeze a good deal of it in single servings. I eat with some variety throughout the week. Also choosing high fiber foods helps a lot with choosing to eat less  Whether that’s scrutinizing the English muffins packs to find the one with 8 grams of fiber, or eating more high fiber acorn squash

3.     Bake your own bread

4.     Nuts, carrots, peanut butter, raisins, yogurt & dried fruit for snacks
